EPDM Rubber

Types of Rubber

What characterizes EPDM rubber?

EPDM rubber was invented in the 1960s to meet evolving industry needs, as raw materials like natural rubber could no longer keep pace. This led to the production of synthetic materials such as EPDM.

EPDM is specifically developed to resist wind, water, and sunlight (UV radiation), making it suitable for a wide range of environments. This type of industrial rubber can be used both indoors and outdoors, with its properties fully exploited especially outdoors under various weather conditions.

No rubber material tolerates harsher weather conditions than EPDM. It offers outstanding UV resistance and durability against water and weather. It operates effectively in temperatures as low as –45°C and at higher temperatures, making it ideal for rubber products expected to perform under diverse conditions.
EPDM also withstands most chemicals used across various industries. Its only limitation is lower resistance to oils such as gasoline and diesel. For oil-exposed environments, other rubber types are recommended. It is always crucial to consider the application environment when selecting materials before production begins.

EPDM is often used in automotive, shipping, and construction industries. It is also common in transportation and rail industries, often in flame-retardant versions, and in the food industry with FDA approval.

EPDM is found in both components and machinery exposed to weather — from rubber bellows and straps to gaskets and covers, all designed to remain tight despite weather-related wear.

Choosing between EPDM and other industrial rubbers depends on whether the product will be installed in sunlight or exposed to chemicals. We gladly advise on the best rubber type for each specific task.

As a custom producer of industrial rubber components, Gravlund Industrigummi has extensive experience tailoring solutions to customer needs.
